Deploy HPE 9106 gateways

Twice in the last couple of weeks I ran into issues while deploying HPE 9106 gateways with Central. In both cases, the gateways came out of the box running ArubaOS 8.13.1.0. I provisioned them using the enable-debug and static-activate commands. After configuring the required IP information, the gateway rebooted, contacted Activate and… nothing happened.

The gateways didn’t appear in Central. I did get the admin prompt, but I had no idea which credentials to use. The MAC address and serial number didn’t work, and the branchsupport username didn’t work either.

I reset the gateways and tried provisioning them using the full-setup option, but the result was the same. I contacted TAC, but they didn’t immediately know how to fix it and escalated the case to engineering. Since I’m impatient, I performed a full setup anyway, because that process creates a local admin account.

Next, I manually upgraded both gateways to version 10.7.2.2, reset them again, and performed another static-activate. You can guess the outcome… the gateways showed up in Central and were ready for configuration

I haven’t heard back from TAC yet, but my guess is that something is wrong with the 8.13.1.0 image version.
